Men's Cross Country Set for UMASS-Dartmouth Invitational

CASTLETON, Vt. – Coming off last weekend's second place finish in the Castleton Invitational, the Castleton men's cross country team is prepared to compete in the UMASS-Dartmouth Invitational this weekend.

Grandon Smith has led the Spartans in the first two weeks, placing first in the first two meets of the season with times of 17:38 in the 3k and 27:27 in the 5k. Last weekend's first place finish was recognized by both the North Atlantic Conference and Eastern College Athletic Conference, both honoring Smith with Runner of the Week honors.

Jonah Lavigne is also off to a promising start in 2016 with two top-ten finishes, including one top five. Lavigne helped the team take second place overall in the Southern Vermont Invitational with a 19-minute mark, which was good enough to take ninth place. In the most recent meet, Lavigne took fourth place with a time of 29:04 to help the Spartans take second overall in the Castleton Invitational. The junior cut off his pace from 6:07 in the first meet to 5:51 in last weekend's top five finish.

With back-to-back second place finishes to start the season, Castleton looks to stay strong this weekend in the UMASS-Dartmouth Invitational. The teams will take their marks at 11:15 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 17.
