The Castleton men's cross-country team came away with a 20th place finish in the UMASS-Dartmouth Invitational, competing with 242 runners from 33 different programs.
Grandon Smith was the first to cross the finish line for Castleton with an overall time of 26:19, beating last week's first place finish in the Castleton Invitational by 1:18. The junior's 5:19 pace gave him a 34th-place finish overall finish for the Spartans.
Jonah Lavigne continued his strong opening stretch of the season, finishing second on the team with a time of 27:44. Jared Wheeler placed in third on the team for the Spartans with an overall time of 28:57, which placed him in 148th place for the race.
As a team, the Spartans averaged 28:23 in the 8K race. Kyle Dash, Patrick Gilligan, Alex Lauzon, and John Everett all competed in the event for Castelton and helped lead the Spartans to the 20th-place team finish with a total of 569 points.
American International came away with the win for the day with a total score of 52 points, edging out second-place Connecticut College by eight points. Stone Hill rounded out the top three with a total of 99 points.
Castleton returns back to action at 4:15 p.m. on Friday for the Vermont State Meet hosted by St. Michael's College.
