Men's Cross Country Takes Fourth in Vermont State Meet

Colchester, Vt. - The Castleton men's cross country program brought home a fourth place finish on Friday afternoon in the 8K Vermont State Meet held by St. Michael's College.

Grandon Smith led the Spartans to the finish line with a 26:18 time, which was good enough for third place overall out of 74 runners. Smith's 5:18 pace left the junior just 18 seconds off the lead at the line. The third place finish was Smith's third top three finish in just four races in 2016.

Jonah Lavigne crossed the line next for Castleton with a time of 28:19, which placed the senior in 24th overall. Lavigne now has three top-25 finishes, including two top tens.

Jared Wheeler followed closely with a 29th-place finish, crossing the line just 37 seconds later at 28:56 to place third on the team.

Patrick Gilligan and Kyle Dash were next for Castleton with times of 29:43 and 30:10, respectively for the Spartans.

Alex Lauzon, John Everett, Max Murphy, Thomas Cuddy, and Tom Rizza all contributed to the Spartans fourth place finish out of seven teams with 94 total points on the afternoon.

Middlebury College placed first in the meet with 26 total points. The Panthers had five runners take the top-six positions, with Smith filling the only other spot. Norwich followed in second place before St. Michaels rounded out the top three with 78 points.

The Spartans will return to action in two weeks at the Western New England Invitational hosted by Springfield College. The starting time for the race is scheduled for 11:15 a.m.
