Milton, N.Y. – Grandon Smith brought home a first place finish in the ECAC Championship on Saturday morning, leading the Castleton men's cross country team to a fifth place finish overall in the 8K race at the Hudson Valley Sports Dome.
Smith paced the field of 113 runners to the finish line for the second consecutive week, this time clocking in at 27:07, which was three seconds faster than second place. Following an 11th place in the ECAC Championships last season, this is Smith's first time taking the ECAC Championships in his three-year career at Castleton.
Jonah Lavigne was the next Spartans runner to finish, turning in a 21st place finish with an overall time of 28:36, which was good enough for another top 25 finish on the season for the senior.
Freshman Jared Wheeler continued his strong opening season with Castleton, placing third on the team and 42nd overall with a time of 29:45. Alex Lauzon and Kyle Dash rounded out the top five for the Spartans, placing in the top half of the pack with 49th and 54th place finishes, respectively.
The Spartans earned a fifth place finish overall in the ECAC Championship, finishing with 165 total points, just two points shy of fourth place Cobleskill. Smith and Lavigne earned All-ECAC honors following the event.
New York University earned the first place finish on the day with three top ten finishers contributing to their 35 total points. United States Merchant Marine Academy followed closely behind in second with 62 points, before Stevens Institute took third place with 127 points tallied.
Castleton will return to action one week from today for the NCAA Championships, hosted by Westfield State.
