CASTLETON, Vt. – Coming off a strong performance in last week's ECAC Championship, the Castleton men's cross country team is bound for Westfield State on Saturday to compete in the NCAA Regionals.
The Spartans earned a fifth place finish in the eight-kilometer race one week ago, led by Grandon Smith taking first place overall. With his second win in as many weeks, Smith led the field of 113 runners to the finish line with an impressive time of 27:07. Smith has led the Spartans in all seven events this season.
Jonah Lavigne was the next runner to cross for Castleton, taking 21st overall with at time of 28:36. Lavigne has been a strong runner all season for the Spartans, earning five top 25 finishes.
Jared Wheeler continued his strong freshman season with a 42nd place finish, while Alex Lauzon and Kyle Dash rounded out the top five for Castleton, with 49th and 54th place finishes, respectively.
Last season, the Spartans earned a 34th place finish out of 55 competing programs in the NCAA Regionals. Smith was the leading runner for Castleton, placing 73rd overall in a field of 380 runners. Lavigne, Lauzon, and Patrick Gilligan also joined Smith in the top five of last year's race.
Castleton will be looking for its third straight top five finish when the Spartans take their marks at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
