Men's Cross Country Places Third at Castleton Invitational

CASTLETON, Vt. – Grandon Smith earned the top spot and the Castleton men's cross country team landed three inside the top 10 to place third overall in the Castleton Invitational Saturday morning.

For the second straight year, Smith paced the field to the finish line on his own course with a time of 26:29, leading the second-place runner by nearly 30 seconds and besting last season's mark by 58 seconds. Gannon McKearin landed a fourth-place finish with a time of 28:20, just ahead of teammate Jared Wheeler in sixth at 28:44.

Oliver Rodgers crossed the line next for Castleton with a time of 32:57, just ahead of teammate Carter Kline, who clocked in at 36:22. Jacob Peet crossed the line with a   time of 42:51 for the Spartans. 

Three top 10 finishers helped the Spartans score 75 points as a team, just two points behind second-place MCLA. Union took first place as a team with a score of 51 behind five runners in the top 15. Southern Vermont and SUNY Canton rounded out the top five with respective scores of 103 and 115. 67 total runners represented 10 different schools in the eight-kilometer event. 

The Spartans return to action next Saturday, Sept. 16, for the UMass-Dartmouth Invitational starting at 12 p.m.
