BOSTON, Mass. – Falling twice on walk-off hits, the Castleton University softball team dropped a couple of contests – 6-5 and 4-3 – to host UMass Boston on Thursday afternoon.
The Spartans fall to 1-7 to begin the 2018 campaign, while the Beacons improve to 4-10 overall with the two wins.
UMass Boston 6, Castleton 5
Leading 2-1 in the top of the fifth with runners on second and third, Tori Swaine cashed in. The junior infielder launched the first pitch of the at-bat over the outfield fence, giving Castleton a four-run lead.
Sara Baker – single – and Cali Van Gorden – double – scored on the homer. Each player finished the day's first game with a pair of hits.
The lead would not last though as the Beacons rallied across the final three innings. Notching a run in the bottom half of the fifth, two in the sixth and two in the seventh, the home team earned the walk-off victory.
In the first inning, Castleton got started immediately as Devin Millerick ripped a triple into the right-centerfield gap out of the two-hole. She would score during the next at-bat on a wild pitch, putting the Spartans up 1-0.
Adding its other run in the top of the third, Swaine drove in Van Gorden from third. In the prior plate appearance, Van Gorden found space in the outfield and placed the ball perfectly, motoring around to third.
Taylor Paquette recorded the loss in the circle after allowing three earned runs through six and two-thirds innings pitched. The senior struck out two.
UMass Boston 4, Castleton 3
Following a similar script as the first game, Castleton jumped out in front first in the tail end of the doubleheader. The Spartans tacked on a run in the first, third and fourth innings before the Beacons rallied to win.
Baker, Van Gorden and Swaine continued to pace the team offensively, notching seven of Castleton's nine hits.
Out of the cleanup spot, Swaine delivered another RBI, driving in Van Gorden who reached on an infield single. Following Baker's single to right, Swaine slapped a base knock to left.
Swaine tallied another RBI in the third on a single, which turned into a triple following an error. Baker scored on the play, making it 2-0.
Taking advantage of another UMass Boston error, Millerick drove in Micaela Madigan in the fourth. After singling to center, she advanced to second via the mishap.
Rachael McCormick started the game for Castleton allowing three earned over four innings. Taking the loss in the circle, Paquette was tagged for the game-winner. She tossed two and two-thirds innings allowing just one run.
Softball returns to action at 1 p.m. on Saturday in a nonconference doubleheader at Skidmore College.
