Waterville, Maine – Castleton came out firing with 44 first-half points and locked down on defense as the team finished with a dominant 83-42 victory over Thomas on Friday evening in North Atlantic Conference action.
The Spartans set a season high with 83 points as they improved to 20-3 overall and 15-1 in conference play. This marks the third straight season that Castleton has won at least 20 games. The Terriers shot just 26.9 percent from the field and was outrebounded 50-21 as they dropped to 3-18 and 3-11 in the NAC.
Castleton shot 52.2 percent from the floor, led by the duo of junior Jade Desroches and Meghan O'Sullivan. Desroches scored a career-high 21 points while also adding seven rebounds, four assists and three steals. O'Sullivan, meanwhile, was 8-for-10 from the floor for 16 points. Heather Murdough grabbed a team-high ten rebounds and chipped in with nine points.
Kate McAllister was the only Thomas player in double figures, scoring 14 points on 4-for-16 shooting from the floor and 6-for-7 from the free throw line. Elizabeth Goodall added five points, three rebounds and two assists, but shot just 2-for-11 from the field.
The Spartans opened the game on a 10-1 run over the first three minutes. McAllister came back with a pair of buckets, but a 10-2 run by Castleton pushed its lead to 20-6 with 13:20 left in the first half. The Spartans continued to assert themselves and over the next eight minutes extended their lead to 35-19 on a jump shot by Shelby LaBarge. Four points by the Terriers made in a 12-point game, but Castleton finished the last four minutes of the first half on a 9-2 run to go into the break with a 44-25 lead.
O'Sullivan made it a 22-point game just 1:23 into the second half and the Spartans pushed their lead to 30 at 13:45 on a three-point play by Desroches. Castleton extended its advantage to 41 on jumper by Desroches with 4:38 left and saw its lead climb as high as 43 on layup by Eva Clark in the final minute before settling for the 41-point victory.
The Spartans had five players grab at least five rebounds in the contest, including five from Stephanie Bull in 11 minutes off the bench. Bull also added nine points and was one of 11 players to score.
Castleton returns to action at 1 pm on Saturday when the Spartans face Maine Farmington.
