Women’s Basketball Heads to Norwich for Rivalry Contest Tuesday

CASTLETON, Vt. – The Castleton University women's basketball team travels to Northfield, Vt., Tuesday night to face the Norwich University Cadets starting at 7:30 p.m. at Andrews Hall.

Castleton is 6-1 overall and 4-1 in the North Atlantic Conference, good enough for second place in the current league standings, after Saturday's 80-48 victory over Lyndon State. As a team, the Spartans are scoring 59.7 points per game and shooting 37.1 percent from the field, including 33.1 percent from behind the three-point line, and 68.1 percent from the free throw line.

Makayla Farrara leads the team and is third in the NAC in both scoring average with 16.7 points per game and three-point field goal percentage at 41.9 percent. Amanda Beatty is averaging 13.1 points and 6.6 rebounds per game as she is shooting 48.5 percent from the field, third-best in the conference. Taylor Raiche leads the team in rebounding with 6.9 boards per game, Lindsay Sabo is tops on the squad in assists at 3.3 assists per game, and Ashlie Fay leads the Spartans in steals with 2.8 steals per game.

Norwich enters Tuesday's game with a 5-3 overall record, including a 2-0 mark within the Great Northeast Athletic Conference after victories over Rivier Nov. 29 and at Mount Ida Saturday, both with the score 63-49. The Cadets, who also own a home 61-48 victory over NAC school Johnson State last Tuesday, are averaging 56.3 points per game and shooting 37.4 percent from the field, including 27.3 percent from behind the three-point line, and 69.1 percent from the free throw line.

Heather LeBlanc has been Norwich's top player so far this season, averaging 16.8 points and 8.9 rebounds per game, as she is shooting 57.6 percent from the field. Arianna Harrison is contributing 10.5 points, 7.3 rebounds, 3.6 assists, 1.4 steals, and 1.1 blocks per game, plus she is shooting 90.9 percent from the free throw line.

According to Norwich's records, the Cadets hold the all-time series advantage over the Spartans, 22-15. Castleton's last victory over Norwich came on Jan. 4, 2014, a 63-47 victory at Glenbrook Gym. Norwich won the most recent contest in Northfield on Jan. 3, 2015, 69-61, as well as last season's battle in Castleton on Jan. 2, 53-51.

In last season's contest, the Spartans rallied from a 12-point deficit halfway through the fourth quarter to tie the game at 51-51 on a three-pointer by Jade Desroches with 36 seconds remaining. However, LeBlanc hit a baseline hook shot with 0.5 seconds on the clock to give Norwich the victory. LeBlanc led the Cadets with 13 points and nine rebounds, while Lindsay Sabo led Castleton with 16 points and Desroches contributed 14 points, nine rebounds, three assists, and four steals.
