Women's Basketball Downed by WestConn, 56-48

DANBURY, Conn. – The Castleton University women's basketball team dropped a mid-week Little East Conference matchup on Wednesday evening, falling by a final score of 56-48 at Western Connecticut State University.

Castleton falls to 12-7 overall and 4-6 in LEC play after the loss, while WestConn improves to 8-10 on the year with a 3-7 mark in LEC action. The two teams split the season series, as the Spartans took the first head-to-head contest earlier this month.

Castleton shot 40.8 percent from the field, knocking down 20-of-49 shots, while the Colonials managed to go just 20-of-62 on the night. The difference came from deep, as WestConn poured in eight threes to Castleton's one. Both teams hauled in 38 rebounds on the night, while Castleton was plagued by a season-high 30 turnovers which led to 26 points for the Colonials.

Brooke Raiche led all scorers with 21 points on 8-of-16 shooting, while Katlyn Toomey continued to dominate the glass for the Spartans with 15 rebounds. It was Raiche's seventh 20-plus point game this season, and Toomey's eighth game with double-digit rebounds. Alexis Quenneville added seven points, while Tessa Davenport had five points in just six minutes off the bench.

Jancy Sherwood dropped a team-high 18 points for the Colonials, going 6-of-11 from the field and 4-of-9 from deep. Gabrielle Hurlburt added 11 points forWestConn, while Genesis Torres dished out a team-high four assists while pulling in seven rebounds. Jessica Davis added eight points and seven boards as well for the Colonials.

WestConn carried a 21-13 lead into the second quarter thanks in part to a late surge in the opening frame. With the game sitting at 12-11 in favor of WestConn, the hosts rattled off a 9-2 run to close the stanza, capped by a three from Sherwood.

Castleton buckled down defensively in the second quarter, however, as the Spartans held WestConn to just three points on one field goal. Castleton narrowed the gap to just four points at halftime, outscoring the Colonials 7-3 in the quarter.

Castleton again halved the deficit in the third quarter, sending the game to the final frame trailing by just two points. The Spartans tied the game up at 38-38 on the first possession of the quarter, as Raiche dropped in a layup. Castleton took its first lead of the game less than a minute later, as Abbie Lesure added a layup of her own to make it 42-40. The two sides traded baskets over the ensuing minutes, with Castleton regaining a 48-46 lead on a layup from Raiche with just less than five minutes to play. It would be the last points Castleton scored on the evening, as WestConn held the Spartans to an 0-for-5 mark from the floor in the waning minutes while forcing three Spartan turnovers.

Castleton returns to the friendly confines of Glenbrook Gym on Saturday at 1 p.m. with a contest against UMass-Boston.
