Plattburgh, N.Y. - The Spartans skated hard and had several opportunities to tie the game, but fell just short, losing to top-ranked Plattsburgh St. 1-0 on Saturday on the road. Jess Cameron and Paula Stephens combined to make 52 saves for the Spartans as Castleton failed to provide some offense.
The Spartans challenged the top ranked team in the nation, pushing Plattsburgh St. to the limit. Despite being outshot 53-16, Castleton remained right in the mix with the top-ranked Cardinals, and nearly tied the game in the final minutes.
Alyssa Parke notched the Cardinals only tally in the early second period. The forward beat Cameron to put the home team up 1-0 just over three minutes into the frame. Morgan MacInnis and Shannon Stewart received assists on the play.
Paula Stephens replaced Cameron following the goal and stood on her head to keep Castleton in the game, including 17 saves in the final period. For the final 3:31 of the contest, Castleton was on the power play. Two penalties on the Cardinals in the final four minutes allowed for the Spartans to generate some offense in the final seconds, but the team couldn't break through.
Plattsburgh St. goalie Sydney Aveson finished with a 16-save shutout as the Cardinals remained undefeated, moving to 4-0-0. Castleton fell to 2-2-0 on the season and will return to action on Friday, Nov. 15 when they travel to Plymouth St. The Spartans will also take on Southern Maine on Saturday, Nov. 16.
