Castleton, Vt. - After setting program-highs with 14 wins and nine conference victories, the third-seeded Spartans will take on the six seed Southern Maine in the ECAC East Quarterfinals at Spartan Arena on Saturday night.
Castleton finished their season strong, winning three out of four games in the final stretch. The Spartans ended their regular season with the most prolific offense in program history, scoring 71 goals on the year, shattering the previous record of 60. The team also set new program-highs for single-season assists (108) and points (179).
The team earned their second straight home playoff game this season, finishing with their best conference playoff seed in team history. Last season, Castleton finished with the fourth seed, earning the right to host the program's first playoff game. The team hosted UMass-Boston and fell to the Beacons 5-3. This year the Spartans hope to go about things differently and earn their first-ever playoff win at Spartan Arena. Castleton has played well in front of their home fans, posting a 9-2-1 record at Spartan Arena this year
Nicoline Jensen has led the offense with 31 points, coming from a team-high 19 assists and 12 goals. Anna Daniels has notched a squad-best 13 goals to go along with 16 assists. Lisa Kilroy is the team's third-leading scorer, notching 10 goals and 13 assists. Rachel Bombardier and Brie Narodowy have each been key for the Spartans on the power play, scoring four power play goals each this season.
In net, the Spartans have relied on Paula Stephens for most of the season. Stephens has posted a record of 11-7-2, the best single-season goalie record in Castleton history. The junior has made 534 saves on the season, and racked up a .943 save percentage while posting three shutouts.
The Spartans and Huskies split a pair of games this season. Castleton fell to Southern Maine early in the year, lsoing 2-1 in Gorham on November 16. Later in the season, the Spartans earned a 4-1 win over the Huskies, working them over at Spartan Arena on February 7.
The Huskies have backed into the playoffs, losing their final four games of the regular season. Senoir Erin Banfield has led the team in scoring this season, turning in 12 goals and six assists on the year. Sophomore defenseman Chelsea Boucher leads the team in assists, passing off eight during the regular season.
In net, Liz Bergstrom has been the team's starting goalie in 18 of the team's 25 games. The junior has gone 8-9-1 on the year, including a win against Castleton. Bergstrom has earned season totals of 2.50 goals against, an .890 save percentage, and 351 saves on the season.
