HARRISVILLE, R.I. – Rachel Bombardier scored the game-winning goal, while Jess Cameron stopped 31 shots as the Spartans picked up a 1-0 victory on Saturday in ECAC East action against Nichols at Levy Rink.
Overall, Castleton outshot the Bisons 44-31 and killed off both of its penalties. The Spartans have now shutout the opposition in three of their six matches so far this season.
The visitors took control of the contest from the opening minutes, and at the 6:58 mark in the initial frame, Castleton grabbed the eventual game-deciding goal. Taylor Steadman delivered a pass to Bombardier, who took the puck and finished it past Nichols goalie, Lindsay O'Connell, for her second goal of the year.
Cameron picked up her third start of the season in goal, improving to 3-0 overall with her first shutout of the year. O'Connell, who was making her collegiate debut for the Bison, received the loss after allowing just one goal with 43 saves.
With the win, Castleton now heads into Tuesday's matchup, which begins at 7 pm at Spartan Arena, against defending national champion and No. 1 overall Plattsburgh State with a 5-1 record (3-1 ECAC East).
