NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Castleton overcame a one-goal deficit to head into the third period even at one with third-ranked Norwich, but the Cadets pulled away with two goals in the final frame to capture a 3-1 victory at Kreitzberg Arena on Saturday Afternoon.
The Spartans fell to Norwich for the 16th consecutive time and remain winless against the in-state rivals. With the loss, Castleton falls to 8-7-1 overall and 3-4-1 in the ECAC East, while the third-ranked Cadets pick up their tenth win of the year to remain unbeaten in conference play (7-0-1).
After Taylor Cross' goal less than three minutes into the opening period gave Norwich an early 1-0 lead, the Spartans battled back and tied the game near the halfway point in the second stanza. At the 9:41 mark, Lisa Kilroy was able to beat the Cadets' Laurie King for her fifth goal of the year to even the score at 1-1.
However, the Norwich attack proved to be too much, as Madison Gallagher scored at the 4:35 mark, and Kim Tiberi tacked on a third goal late in the final frame to secure a 3-1 victory for the Cadets.
Paula Stephens turned in a strong performance for the Spartans, stopping 30 of the 33 shots that she faced in the losing effort. Her counterpart, Laurie King, was just as good with 14 saves to record her third win of the season.
Castleton is back in action next weekend when it hosts St. Anselm and UMass Boston for a pair of conference contests at Spartan Arena.
