MARSHFIELD, Mass. – The Castleton University women's ice hockey team has been selected to finish third in the New England Hockey Conference's Preseason Coaches' Poll, as was released by the league office on Thursday morning.
In the poll, Castleton received 44 points, which was four ahead of the fourth-place University of New England Nor'Easters. Ranking in front of the Spartans was the Beacons of the University of Massachusetts Boston with 54 points while defending conference champion Norwich University placed first. The Cadets received all eight first-place votes.
Castleton enters the 2017-18 campaign off an 8-14-4 record during the past year. Ashley Salerno takes over at head coach for the Spartans and in her first year is looking to return the team to its past form.
Captain Hannah Rose and Assistant Captains Lisa Kilroy and Jade Remillard lead 14 returning Spartans. Of those, All-NEHC Rookie Alexis Kalm looks to improve on her impressive freshman year between the pipes where she made 380 saves in 15 appearances.
The Spartans begin the regular season at 4 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 27 against nonconference opponent Becker College. Meanwhile, they will play their first game at 3 p.m. on Saturday as they travel to face the four-time defending National Champion Plattsburgh Cardinals in an exhibition contest.
Women's ice hockey's first NEHC game will be on the road at Salve Regina on Nov. 3, while their first home conference matchup will be against New England College the following weekend.
