RUTLAND, Vt. – Led by senior assistant captain Lisa Kilroy's two scores, the Castleton University women's ice hockey team started the season with a 7-2 win over visiting Becker College.
The Spartans scored early and often in the win, starting with Kilroy's first goal of the day at 5:47 of the first period. Maeghan Vasile put an entry pass in front of Kilroy, who finished the fast-break score top shelf.
Less than three minutes later, at 8:35, Ali Stevens notched her first-career goal with a one-timer at the right post. Aimee Briand started the play in the corner before she passed it in front of the goal to Stevens. At the time of the goal, Castleton had just returned to full strength, two seconds earlier.
Scoring two rapid-fire goals in the waning seconds of the first period, Castleton extended its lead to 4-0. First Stevens returned the favor to Briand at 19:23 before Hannah Rose found Jade Remillard from the defensive line at 19:38.
Three minutes into the second, Vasile blocked a Becker shot at the point, corralled the puck and took it one-on-one with the goalie, finishing the breakaway score off the backhand just inside the right post.
Continuing the scoring barrage and making it 6-0, Kilroy notched her second goal of the day by pummeling the puck from right in front of the goal. While on the power play, Rose passed from the left defense to Courtney Gauthier on the right defense. Gauthier ripped a shot wide, which travelled around the boards to Kilroy, who finished the job.
Nicolle Trivino wrapped up Castleton's scoring during another power play opportunity. Bre Babiarz found Trivino off the faceoff where the latter slapped a shot that deflected off the goalie's glove and in.
Becker's two goals came at the midway point of the final period with the first on a power play. The Hawks passed the puck back-and-forth through the offensive zone to Claudia Gee who put it away, effectively ending the shutout.
Less than five minutes later, Becker struck again with Elysabeth Jefferies and Nikolle Storey combining to bring the puck up the ice. Once in the offensive zone, Michaela Martin put it behind Castleton goalie Rylie Wills on the left side.
In the goal, Wills improves to 1-0-0 on the year, while making 11 saves over 59:48 of game time. For Becker, Julia Johnson took the loss, allowing six goals, while also making 15 saves in 39:58. Madison Rigsby played the other 20 minutes for the Hawks, allowing one score and making 18 saves.
Castleton returns to the ice at 3 p.m. on Saturday as the team travels to face perennially ranked Oswego State in a nonconference matchup. Becker heads back to Worcester, Mass. for its home opener at 7 p.m. on Saturday against Franklin Pierce University.
