Spartans Hang Tough; Fall 3-2 In OT

OSWEGO, N.Y. – Led by Nicolle Trivino's game-tying chip-shot goal over the left shoulder of Oswego's goaltender – Mariah Madrigal – with 0.9 seconds remaining in regulation, Castleton forced the host Lakers to an overtime period before eventually succumbing 3-2.

The Spartans fall to 1-1 during the young season, while Oswego State improves to 2-0.

With the time winding down quickly, Castleton put in a last-ditch effort, keeping the puck in its offensive zone for close to the final minute of play. After several opportunities were stopped short, Trivino took the puck through the middle of the zone and backhanded it off Madrigal's pad before it kicked up, over her shoulder and in.

After both teams had opportunities to start the overtime period, Oswego settled with the puck in the Castleton zone. Goalie Alexis Kalm rejected several shots before being blocked by multiple players. The Lakers' Sarah Randazzo took advantage and ripped a shot from the point, which slipped just inside the far post.

Kalm was tagged with the loss despite making several major saves and game-saving plays. The sophomore netminder made 36 stops to the tune of a .923 save percentage.

Castleton opened the first period as the more aggressive team – owning a 3-1 shots-on-goal advantage through the first 10 minutes – despite the overall play being more defensive in nature.

Following a near miss – that was halfway in the goal before being saved by Madrigal – off the stick of Maeghan Vasile, Oswego's Emma Morisette struck for the first score of the day. Morisette put back an original Laker shot top shelf to grab the 1-0 advantage.

Subsequent to several more defensive encounters, Oswego struck again midway through the second stanza, going up 2-0. Eryn Stewart quickly laced an entry pass just inside the left post, as the defense was still looking right.

Trailing 2-0 early in the third, the Spartans went on back-to-back 5-on-3 power plays, converting on one. Ali Stevens hooked the shot past Madrigal off Lisa Kilroy's pass, which originally came from Aimee Briand.

Castleton returns to action for a New England Hockey Conference contest at Salve Regina at 7 p.m. on Friday.
