MARSHFIELD, Mass. – Three Castleton University Women's Ice Hockey players have received recognition from the New England Hockey Conference in its weekly award release for the week ending Oct. 29.
Ali Stevens was named NEHC Rookie of the Week after she burst on the scene with her first two career goals and an assist over the weekend. During Castleton's 7-2 season-opening victory over Becker College, the freshman scored her first goal to put the Spartans up 2-0. Moments later, Stevens recorded the assist on the eventual game-winning score.
On Saturday at Oswego – which is receiving votes in the latest d3hockey.com and USCHO.com polls – Stevens converted a power play opportunity to get the Spartans on the board.
Alexis Kalm received recognition as Co-Goaltender of the Week after making 36 saves in her first appearance of the year. The Aberdeen, N.C. native made several game-changing plays against a very aggressive Laker squad. Kalm kept the Spartans in it long enough to allow them to come back from down 2-0 and force overtime.
Wrapping up Castleton's honors was senior forward and co-captain Lisa Kilroy, who was named to the NEHC Honor Roll for the week. She was the team's top scorer during Castleton's first two games. On Friday, Kilroy scored the team's first goal, before converting a power play chance later in the contest. Against Oswego, Kilroy recorded a pair of assists, helping on both of the Spartans' goals. The Leominster, Mass. native gave the final pass in both situations, including on the game-tying overtime-forcing score with 0.9 seconds remaining in regulation.
Women's ice hockey returns to action at 7 p.m. on Friday at Salve Regina University for their first conference game of the season.
