MARSHFIELD, Mass. – Casey Traill of the Castleton University women's ice hockey team has been named New England Hockey Conference Rookie of the Week for the week ending Jan. 28.
Traill played an important part in the Spartans 1-1 week, notching a pair of assists while playing big minutes defensively. On Friday, the freshman tallied the assist on the game-winning goal early in the third period. From the far right side of the ice, Traill wound up and ripped a slap shot on goal, which was redirected by her teammate for the score.
Following it up on Saturday against UMass Boston, the South Shields, England native picked up an assist on the first equalizing goal. Part of a shorthanded defensive squad, which saw just four defenders in the lineup on Saturday, Traill was responsible for several blocked shots. Her stingy defense kept the game close throughout and contributed to the extra period.
Traill and the women's ice hockey team will return to action at 7 p.m. on Tuesday for a battle against newly-re-anointed No. 1 Norwich.
