RUTLAND, Vt. – Reigning in the final weekend of the regular season, the Castleton University women's ice hockey team will travel north for the 'Maine Double,' as they seek to lock down a home playoff contest.
Making its first stop in Biddeford, Maine, Castleton will take on the University of New England at 4 p.m. on Friday. Owning the one tie on the Spartans record, the Nor'Easters came to Rutland back in November and claimed a 3-3-overtime draw.
Capping three unanswered goals for UNE, Marykate Drinkwater gave her team the lead at the 10:52 mark of the third frame. It would only last for a brief time as Lisa Kilroy tallied the equalizer less than six minutes later.
Rylie Wills and Caty Flagg made 26 and 24 saves each in the tie, respectively.
Wrapping up the regular season, the Spartans head south to Gorham, Maine to face the Huskies of the University of Southern Maine at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
Earlier in the season, Castleton defeated USM 4-1 with help from four unanswered goals after the Huskies staked a 1-0 advantage. Jocelyn Forrest, Nicolle Trivino, Rose and Kilroy were guilty of the scores as goalie Alexis Kalm got her first win of the year.
The four-time and defending New England Hockey Conference Goalie of the Week – Kalm – now has four shutouts in 2017-18 and owns a .918 save percentage and a 2.32 goals-against-average.
Castleton, which currently has earned 15 conference points and sits in third in the standings, will find out their playoff seeding and opponent through a NEHC release on Sunday evening.
