Stevens Scores But Spartans Drop NEHC Decision At UNE

BIDDEFORD, Maine – Jessie Scott's two goals led the University of New England Nor'Easters past the visiting Castleton University women's ice hockey team 3-1 on Friday afternoon.

Castleton falls to an 11-12-1 overall and 7-5-1 in the New England Hockey Conference, while UNE improves to 9-8-7 and 4-4-5 in league action. The squads have 15 and 14 points in the NEHC standings heading into the final contest of the regular season, respectively.

It was the Nor'Easters that started the contest as the more aggressive team with six shots in the opening several minutes. Yet, they were all to no avail as Alexis Kalm either saved them or redirected them wide.

The Spartans returned the favor moments later as they took target practice with six-straight attempts on goal. Sharing the puck, Aimee Briand, Ali Stevens, Jocelyn Forrest, Chanel Tvergyak, Courtney Gauthier and Casey Traill tallied shots.

Striking at the 9:07 mark of the first, Scott picked up her first point of the game with help from Jessica Tolzman and Michaela McLaughlin.

She added a second tally in the middle frame, while Carly Perreault scored UNE's third goal of the game, which was enough to down the Spartans. Stevens made a valiant attempt to spark Castleton's offense with the ninth goal of her rookie campaign. Hannah Rose and Briand assisted it with less than six left in regulation.

Taking the loss between the pipes, Kalm made 25 saves. On the other side, Caty Flagg earned the win and stopped 35 would-be goals.

In the face-off column, Briand continued to dominant where she has all season long. The junior center tallied 20 wins versus just nine losses as Castleton claimed the overall tally (29-20).

Women's ice hockey returns to action at 4 p.m. on Saturday as the team wraps up the regular season with an NEHC contest at the University of Southern Maine.
