RUTLAND, Vt. – Samantha Munroe's late goal to bring the Castleton University women's ice hockey team within one was not enough as the Spartans fell in the WSYB/Catamount Radio Invitational Consolation Game – 2-1 – to the Manhattanville College Valiants at Spartan Arena on Sunday afternoon.
Castleton falls to 4-9-2 overall, while Manhattanville improves to 8-2-2.
Just over a minute after Manhattanville's Nicole Mensi notched her second goal of the contest to give the visiting squad a 2-0 lead with 13:13 remaining in regulation, Castleton struck back.
Bringing the puck into the Valiant zone, Castleton cycled around the net, setting itself up. From near the blue line, Casey Traill sent it to the right of the goal to Courtney Gauthier who forwarded it to Munroe. Collecting it, she flicked it toward the goal where it deflected and found the back of the net. The score was Munroe's first of the season.
Earlier in the contest, Mensi got the Valiants on the board as she cut in front of the goal, receiving a pass from behind that she was able to stuff into the net.
Rylie Wills was charged with the loss in net as she surrendered two goals while making 22 saves in 58:06 of playing time.
The two sides nearly split the faceoff battle, although Castleton earned the slight 25-23 advantage. Aimee Briand collected the majority of the Spartans' wins as she went 15-for-21.
Following the tournament's completion, Castleton's Jade Remillard was recognized with a spot on the All-Tournament team after tallying two goals in the first semifinal on Friday. For more information regarding the tournament, click here.
Women's ice hockey returns to action at 4 p.m. on Wednesday as it travels to Brunswick, Maine to face Bowdoin College in nonconference action.
