CASTLETON, Vt. – The goals came early and often for the Castleton women's lacrosse team as they dominated play on the way to a 16-0 victory over Green Mountain on Saturday afternoon at Spartan Stadium.
The Spartans scored just 27 seconds into the contest and didn't let up, scoring six times in the opening ten minutes as they improved to 3-5 on the year and 2-0 in the North Atlantic Conference. Green Mountain, meanwhile, dropped to 0-4 and 0-1 in conference play.
The shutout was the first for Castleton since silencing Elms 23-0 on March 26, 2011. Three different players recorded three points, led Kate Auer with a hat trick. Taryn Smith added two goals and an assist while Maddy DaCosta dished off three assists.
Smith found Auer right in front on a pass from behind the net just 27 seconds into the game and Brandi Whittemore added back-to-back goals over the next four minutes to push the Spartan lead to 3-0. Auer scored her second off a feed from DaCosta and then Amanda Flodstrom and Smith made it 5-0 at 20:09.
The Spartans continued to control play in the second half and pushed their lead to 15-0 ten minutes into the second half on a goal by Kim Gosselin. Johnson concluded the Castleton scoring off a Shelby Smyth pass with 18:45 left as the team earned its largest victory of the year.
Meghan Els earned her first win of the year, saving both shots she faced. Virginia Anderson look the loss by was strong, allowing 16 goals while also making 13 saves.
Castleton returns to action on Monday at 4 pm when the team hosts Western New England.
