Spartans Take Down Western Connecticut 17-14

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Castleton received a career performance from junior Brandi Whittemore and the team didn't trail in the second half on the way to a 17-14 victory over Western Connecticut St. on Saturday afternoon at Albertus Magnus College. 

Whittemore posted a career-high 11 points on six goals and five assists to pace the offense while also grabbing four draw controls, picking up three ground balls and causing three turnovers. Senior Kate Auer added five goals, one assist, four ground balls and three draw controls. 

The Spartans were actually outshot 43-29 in the contest and the Colonials grabbed 21 of the 31 draw controls but the visitors did pick up 21 ground balls compared to 15 for Western Conn. 

Junior Meghan Els was impressive in net, making a career-high 19 saves for her first win of the year as Castleton improved to 1-1 on the season. The Colonials dropped to 1-1 with the loss. 

Western Connecticut jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the first six minutes but goals by Maddy DaCosta and Auer tied it up with 20:08 left in the half. The two teams continued to trade goals until Whittemore put the Spartans up 6-5. They scored three of the final four goals in the half to take a 9-7 lead at the break. 

Whittemore opened up the half with three goals in the first three minutes, the third on a free position shot for the 12-7 advantage. Midway through the period a Brianna MacKay score pushed the Castleton lead to 14-9 with 16:35 left in the contest. The Colonials responded with the next three goals to close the deficit to 14-12 at 12:20, but Whittemore answered two minutes later for the three-goal lead. Western Connecticut closed within two, 16-15, in the final four minutes but Hannah Braman scored with 3:27 left to provide the final three-goal margin. 

Nicole Petruzzi took the loss for the Colonials, making nine saves while playing all 60 minutes. 

Castleton returns to action on Thursday when the team travels to face Western New England at 4 pm.
