Castleton's Comeback Falls Short, Loses 13-11

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Castleton's women's lacrosse team trailed by just one with 6:05 remaining in the game, but couldn't complete the comeback as the Western New England Golden Bears claimed a 13-11 victory on Thursday afternoon at Golden Bear Stadium in Springfield, Mass.

Brianna MacKay paced the Spartan offense with a season-high four goals, while Kate Auer added three goals and two assists to go along with six groundballs and four draw controls as the squad fell to 1-2 on the season. The Golden Bears' Kaitlynn Stevens scored seven goals with three assists to help the team notch their third straight victory and improve to 3-1 overall.

Western New England controlled possession of the game, outshooting the Spartans 38-24 while also holding the edge in draw controls 19-7.

The Golden Bears jumped out to a quick start in the contest, grabbing a 9-2 lead thanks to four goals from Stevens before Brandi Whittemore scored one of her three goals to cut the Spartan deficit to six heading into the break.

Stevens opened the second half with her fifth goal of the game to make it 10-3 just 3:48 into the frame, but Castleton responded by outscoring the opposition 7-1 over a span of 19:13 to bring the away side back within striking distance, 11-10. However, Stevens netted two goals in the final 2:02 to capture a 13-11 victory.

In the cage, Meghan Els suffered her second loss of the year after producing 17 saves and compiling eight groundballs. Her counterpart, Emily Castleman, recorded eight saves to pick up the victory.

The Spartans return to action this Sunday when they travel to Northfield, Vt. to face the Norwich Cadets at 1 pm in non-conference action.
