CASTLETON, Vt. – Castleton's women's lacrosse team jumped out to a 4-2 lead in the opening frame before outscoring the opposition 8-1 in the final period of play to capture a 12-3 victory at Colby-Sawyer this afternoon.
The Spartans outshot the opposition 25-22 while also holding the edge in draw controls 13-4 and completing 12 of the team's 13 clearance attempts. With the win, Castleton improves to 6-2 overall and 3-0 in the conference while the Chargers fall to 3-3 overall (3-1 NAC).
Kate Auer paced the Spartan attack with five points (3g, 2a) and eight draw controls, while Maddy DaCosta added three goals and one assist of her own. Caitlyn Whearty, meanwhile, led the Colby-Sawyer offense with two goals.
The game started out with both teams trading goals before Brianna MacKay scored twice in the final 2:54 of the opening frame to give Castleton a 4-2 lead heading into halftime.
The Spartans got off to a quick start after the break, as Grace Johnson, DaCosta and Auer scored to extend the away side's lead to 7-2 less than three minutes into the second half of play.
The Chargers got one back when Whearty scored at the 25:05 mark in the frame to make it 7-3, but Castleton responded with five goals in the final 24:31 of play en route to capturing a 12-3 victory this afternoon.
Meghan Els and Rachel Bombardier split time in the cage, combining to produce ten saves with just three goals allowed. Meghan Castellano, meanwhile, suffered the loss after allowing 12 goals with seven saves.
The Spartans return to action on Friday afternoon when they travel to Northfield, Vt. to face the Norwich Cadets at 5 pm before hosting the Husson Eagles Saturday at noon.
