CASTINE, Maine – Castleton set a new program record this afternoon by capturing its tenth straight victory with a 20-6 decision over the Maine Maritime Mariners at Ritchie Field.
The Spartans turned in a dominating performance, as they outshot the opposition 35-13 while also holding the edge in draw controls 20-8. With the win, Castleton improves to 11-2 overall and remains unbeaten in the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) at 6-0, whereas the Mariners fall to 1-8 (1-4 NAC) on the season.
Brianna MacKay and Maddy DaCosta paced the Castleton attack with three goals and three assists apiece, while Brandi Whittemore and Grace Johnson added three goals of their own. Rachael Redles, meanwhile, was Maine Maritime's top performer after finding the back of the cage three times.
MacKay and Mariah Lesure started the ballgame with back-to-back scores to give the away side an early 2-0 lead before Redles collected an unassisted goal to cut the hosts' deficit back to one. The Spartan offense responded with six straight goals, including two from DaCosta and MacKay, to extend their advantage to 8-1 with 11:23 left in the first.
The Mariners showed their resiliency, however, as Redles scored her second goal of the ballgame at the 10:33 mark, and Taylor O'Malley added another one to close the gap back to five.
But in the final 3:27 of the initial frame, Castleton's offense came alive, as Johnson and Whittemore scored two goals apiece and Mikayla Cusson tacked on another to give the visitors a 13-3 lead heading into the break.
The Spartans' offense didn't slow down in the second half, scoring six straight goals to start the frame and take a 19-3 lead. DaCosta opened the scoring less than four minutes into the second followed by scores from Kate Auer, Emilee Maher, Tiffany Danyow and Whittemore. Emily Cross completed the six-goal run with her seventh goal of the season on a man-up advantage at the 20:42 mark.
Just over two minutes later, Tori Cooper got one back for Maine Maritime before Briana Obshatkin and Redles provided scores of their own to bring the hosts back within 13. However, it was too little too late, as Hannah Braman provided a late score to secure a 20-6 Castleton victory.
In the cage, Meghan Els improved to 7-2 on the season after stopping six of the 12 shots that she faced, whereas Ashlee Knight produced eight saves for the Mariners in the losing effort.
The Spartans return to play next Tuesday at 7 pm when they host the New England College Pilgrims at Spartan Stadium in conference play before facing Johnson St. on Saturday at 1 pm in the final regular season game away from home.
