JOHNSON, Vt. – Castleton outscored Johnson 10-0 in the second half and held the Badgers to just two shots total in the period on the way to a strong 20-3 victory on Saturday afternoon.
The Spartans won their program-record 12th straight contest on Saturday and did it behind a balanced attack that had 12 different players record a point. Senior Kate Auer led the offense with five goals, one assist and five draw controls, moving her into second place in the program's all-time goal list with 167. She is also third all-time in points now with 228 and owns the Castleton record for draw controls with 304.
Senior Maddy DaCosta added four goals on four shots with one assist while Brianna MacKay had three assists and one goal. Brandi Whittemore chipped in three goals and two ground balls as Grace Johnson recorded three assists.
Castleton scored six times in the opening the minutes and Whittemore made it 7-0 off a feed from MacKay at 18:55. The Badgers got on the board with a pair of goals just 20 seconds apart, but the Spartans outscored Johnson St. 3-1 over the last 14 minutes of the half.
Whittemore led off the second 1:39 into the second and DaCosta extended the lead to 12-3 at 28:04. Kate Auer scored 15 seconds later for the 10-goal lead and Castleton added seven more goals in the final 26 minutes for the 17-goal victory.
The Spartans finished with a 32-13 shot advantage in shots and Meghan Els earned her eighth win of the season by making seven saves and allowing just three goals. Samantha Jankowski took the loss while making seven saves to fall to 2-10.
Castleton is now 13-2 overall on the year and finished North Atlantic Conference play with a pristine 8-0 record to claim the top spot in the upcoming tournament. The Spartans return to action on Tuesday when they conclude their regular season by hosting Keene St. at 7 pm.
