Women's Lacrosse Buries Beavers in Non-Conference Win

CASTLETON, Vt. – The Castleton University women's lacrosse team opened the game on a 7-0 run and never looked back on Wednesday evening, downing the University of Maine at Farmington by a final score of 15-5 in a matchup of former North Atlantic Conference foes.

The Spartans improve to 2-3 on the season with the win, while Farmington falls to 0-4 on the campaign. Castleton held a 38-17 shot advantage, including a 24-9 edge in shots on goal. Castleton also earned 13-of-21 draw controls while picking up 26 ground balls to UMF's 19. The Spartans converted on 16-of-23 clears, while the Beavers managed to complete just 12-of-21.

Morgan Derosia and Megan Wood each had five points on the day, Derosia scoring three goals with two assists, and Wood with a goal and four helpers. Erin McKenna and Abbie Lesure also added hat tricks for the Spartans with three goals apiece, while Emma Best added two goals and Valentina MacEachern scored her first career goal. McKenna, Best and Lesure added four ground balls apiece, while Best led the way with four caused turnovers and four draw controls. Samantha Hebb earned the win in goal, her second of the season, stopping three shots in the opening half before giving way to Raven Payne.

Keilly Lynch netted a trio of goals for the Beavers on the day, accounting for a majority of the UMF offense. Isabella Monbouquette had a goal and an assist in the contest, while Kaya Backman scored UMF's other marker. Heather Boland shouldered the loss, allowing nine goals with seven saves in 30 minutes of play.

McKenna got the scoring started just more than two minutes into play, burying a pass from Aubra Linn to give Castleton a 1-0 lead. The lead doubled to 2-0 when Lesure finished a free-position shot just minutes later before swelling to 4-0 after quick goals from Derosia and Best. With 18:22 to play in the half, Lesure scored her second goal of the game on a pass from Wood, followed by a goal from Megan Krumm just 41 seconds later to make it 6-0. Lesure capped off the 7-0 run by completing the hat trick with nearly 11 minutes remaining in the half. The Beavers rattled off back-to-back goals to make it a 7-2 game, as Backman and Monbouquette got UMF on the board. McKenna pushed Castleton back ahead 8-2 before the break with a free-position score.

The Spartans got back on the board just shy of four minutes into the second half, when Derosia netted her second goal of the game unassisted, but Lynch followed with two straight goals for the Beavers to make it 9-4 in favor of Castleton. The Spartans bounced back with five consecutive goals to push the lead to 14-4, as Krumm, Wood, Derosia, MacEachern and Best rattled off scores. After Lynch completed her hat trick for the Beavers, McKenna polished off the scoring with an unassisted goal to make it a 15-5 game.

Castleton returns to action on Sunday at 2 p.m. when it hosts in-state rival Norwich at Dave Wolk Stadium.
