CASTLETON, Vt. – Members of the Castleton University wrestling team picked up some key victories during the day, but the Spartans as a squad went 1-2 during its home quad match Saturday at Glenbrook Gymnasium, defeating Plymouth State, 44-8, but losing to Springfield College, 28-15, and to Johnson & Wales, 41-6.
Max Tempel won all three matches, starting with a pin of Springfield's Patrick Ferzoco just 1:51 into the match. Tempel then needed just 2:25 to pin Eddie Bello of Plymouth State before going the distance in his final match of the day against Joe Ferinde of Johnson & Wales, earning a 6-4 decision victory over the sixth-ranked 141-pound wrestler in the country.
Jesse Webb also defeated a nationally ranked wrestler, squeaking out a 2-1 victory over Jonah Aurelio of Johnson & Wales, ranked ninth in the heavyweight division by the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA). Webb also picked up a victory over Derek Sardella of Plymouth State, pinning him with 23 seconds remaining in the first period of their match.
The Spartans got off to a strong start against Springfield, winning the first three matches as both Ryan Cabezas at 125 pounds and Nick Camacho at 133 pounds earned overtime victories before Tempel's pin. However, the Pride won six of the final seven matches, including two pins and two technical falls, to win the overall dual.
Castleton won eight of 10 matches in its victory over Plymouth State, featuring pins by Cabezas, Tempel. Webb, and Reece Millington at 149 pounds. After a 7-0 decision victory over Seve Burgos of Springfield, Cedrick Stephens earned his second victory of the day at 197 pounds with a technical fall win over Trevor Wassel.
Johnson & Wales (20-2), ranked fourth in the country by the NWCA, outscored its opponents by a combined score of 126-12 to sweep the duals. Springfield (9-9) went 2-1 during the day, coupling its victory over Castleton with a convincing 38-6 win over Plymouth State (3-8), but the Panthers' Nick Simeti was able to win all three of his matches at 157 pounds.
Castleton (11-8) faces Norwich University in the Battle for the Green Mountain Championship Wednesday, Feb. 7, at 7 p.m. in Northfield, Vt. The Spartans then return home for their final match of the season at Glenbrook Gym against Williams College Friday, Feb. 9, beginning at 7 p.m.
