MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Several members of the Castleton University wrestling team were recognized by the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) for performances both on the mat and in the classroom, as the NEWA announced its end-of-season and All-Academic awards Thursday.
Max Tempel was named to the NEWA All-Rookie Team as well as Honorable Mention All-NEWA at 141 pounds after earning All-Region honors with a fifth-place finish at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championships. After posting a 28-9 record at 149 pounds, Tempel dropped one weight class and won 16 of 19 matches in the final month of the season.
For the second straight year, Jared Costa received Honorable Mention All-NEWA recognition at 165 pounds, finishing 26-10 this season capped by a fourth-place finish at the regional championships for All-Region honors. Castleton's third All-Region performer, Jesse Webb, was named Honorable Mention All-NEWA at 285 pounds, as was Cedrick Stephens at 197 pounds after a 28-8 record during the year.
Costa, Tempel, and Webb also led 12 Castleton wrestlers on the NEWA All-Academic Team, as those three along with Nick Scott added the NEWA award to the NWCA Scholar All-American Award they previously received. Ben Billings, Ryan Butcavage, Ryan Haff, Jeb Hodsden, James Kilgo, Spencer Kozlak, Mitchell LaFlam, and Hunter Martel also earned a spot on the NEWA All-Academic Team for making a significant contribution to the team along with at least a 3.2 grade point average.
Castleton University won 11 dual matches for the second consecutive season and finished 11th as a team at the NCAA Northeast Regionals.
