CASTLETON, Vt. – The Castleton University women's rugby team continued to show improvement in its inaugural NCAA season, but Molloy College was able to earn a 45-10 victory over the Spartans Sunday afternoon at Alumni Field.
For the second straight week, the Spartans scored first, as Savanah Graves took a pitch from Willow Barbero-Menzel and scored her first career try. Katie Campbell added the conversion to give Castleton a 7-0 lead 10 minutes into the contest.
Molloy (2-1) scored 24 straight points, with Siobhan Coady picking up the Lions' first try of the match, followed by three consecutive tries scored by Jacqueline Maida and Elizabeth Kaminski adding two conversions. Campbell ended the first half with a successful penalty kick to close the Castleton deficit to 24-10 at halftime.
Molloy pulled away in the second half as Jericka Ruiz earned back-to-back tries and Megan Riveiro also scored a try, with Kaminski scoring conversions after all three second-half tries. The Spartans came close to scoring on a couple of occasions in the second half, but could not complete any of their opportunities.
Castleton (0-3) heads to Fairfield, Conn., for a rematch with Sacred Heart University next Sunday, Sept. 25, starting at 2 p.m.
