CASTLETON, Vt. – Quinnipiac University showed why it won the national championship in women's rugby last season and is a contender to repeat this year, defeating Castleton University, 215-0, Sunday afternoon in a National Intercollegiate Rugby Association match at Alumni Field.
Quinnipiac (6-1) scored its first try just over one minute into the contest and never looked back, as all 15 members of the starting lineup earned at least one try during the match. Ilona Maher led the Bobcats with four tries and four assists, while Hailey Wyatt, Mason Johnson, and Karee Helgerson picked up three tries apiece.
Madison Gegeckas also finished with three tries, plus she was successful on 22 conversion kicks. Emma Shipton scored the first try of the match and later contributed two dropkick scores to the winning effort.
Castleton University (0-8) concludes its inaugural season of NCAA varsity rugby by hosting the University of New England next Saturday, Oct. 29, starting at 3 p.m. at Alumni Field.
