CASTLETON, Vt. – The Castleton University women's rugby team showed improved defense and confidence throughout its season finale, but the University of New England put together enough offensive opportunities to defeat the Spartans, 55-5, late Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.
UNE (5-2) struck first in the fifth minute of action as Jenni Laferriere scored the opening try of the match. Three-and-a-half minutes later, Katie Gorenflo scored the first of her two tries, and Emily Richard successfully made the conversion kick, the first of five conversions for the senior, to increase the Nor'easter lead to 12-0.
With just over eight minutes remaining in the first half, the Spartans broke through, as Ali Sadowski scored a try after a long period of possession for Castleton. UNE was able to score at the end of the half when Emily Morris set up Caitlin Paredes for a try.
The Nor'easters scored all 31 points in the second half, with Kassidy Towne earning two tries and Andrea Call, Morris, and Emma Foss picking up one try apiece.
Before the match, seven Spartans were recognized in Senior Day ceremonies for their contributions to the inaugural NCAA season of Castleton women's rugby: Shania Brown, Katie Campbell, Casey Comeau, Melissa Dimock, Jordan Hill, Allison L'Esperance, and Molly Smith.
