CASTLETON, Vt. – Led by a late score from Calista Carl, the Castleton University women's rugby team ended its current losing streak by earning a 10-10 draw with the Long Island University Post Pioneers. The Spartans are now 0-5-1, while the Pioneers are 1-1-2.
Scoring the first try of the afternoon, LIU Post cashed in just two minutes into the first period of play. Following the quick score, neither team was able to touch down the ball in the second period.
Castleton's Savanah Graves opened the final period of play with a successful try attempt just one minute in. She was assisted by Carl, which helped bring the score to 5-5.
Following the Carl score, which gave Castleton the 10-5 lead at the 5:30 mark of the third. Then, on the final play of regulation, LIU Post was able to break a few tackles and get to the sideline, where the athlete was able to score.
Rugby returns to action at 6 p.m. on Saturday as the Spartans travel to face nationally ranked the University of New England.
