CASTLETON. Vt. – A strong second half effort was not enough as the Castleton University women's rugby team fell at home to Sacred Heart University, 45-25.
Sacred Heart scored the first three tries of the match in the first quarter. Graves earned her second try of the season at the end of the first quarter as the Spartans entered the first break trailing 19-5.
Sacred Heart did all of the scoring in the second quarter with tries from Nia Williams and Sophie Hale. Kaylee Hale hit both conversion attempts as she finished 5-for-7 on the afternoon. She also had one try and to assists for the visitors. Isabel Cuddy lead all players with three tries.
Mikaela Phillips scored a try for Castleton at 2:25 of the third quarter with a feed from May. After back-to-back tries for the Pioneers from Cuddy, Castleton trailed 45-10 entering the final frame.
The Spartans had three tries in the fourth quarter to account for all of the scoring. Graves got her second on a long run, while Kailyn Duff was the beneficiary of another assist by May from close range push. May closed the scoring, with an assist from Duff, at 12:21 of the fourth quarter.
On the road at Sacred Heart on Sept. 22, the Spartans managed just one try and were defeated 71-5 after the Pioneers exploded for a 34-point opener quarter.
The Spartans will play their final match of the 2018 season next Sunday when they host LIU Post.
