WILMINGTON, N.Y. – Maintaining, yet improving its performance on Saturday, the Castleton University women's alpine ski team put together another podium-topping performance at Whiteface Mountain on Sunday.
During day two of giant slalom action, Castleton placed two athletes in the top 3 and increased its winning margin, again over the University of Connecticut. Recording a combined time of 6:50.0 (410.04 seconds), the Spartans earned the team victory by nearly 17 seconds. Babson College and Clarkson University maintained its positions in third and fifth, respectively, while the University of Massachusetts Amherst replaced St. Anselm College in fourth.
Linn Ljungemo led the Spartans again, this time collecting first with a total of 2:14.66. Teammate Kylie Mackie followed suit, also moving up the standings to claim the runner-up finish with a time of 2:16.89.
Separated by less than two seconds from Mackie, Kirsten Kruk moved up from sixth on Saturday to fourth during day two. The junior notched a 2:18.49 combined time, which completed Castleton's scoring line.
Placing in the top 10 for the second straight giant slalom competition, Li Aunes raced through her two runs to the tune of a 2:23.10 time.
Women's alpine skiing will return to the slopes for giant slalom racing at 9:30 a.m. on Feb. 3. Action will take place at West Mountain in Queensbury, N.Y., which will also be the site of the United States Collegiate Ski and Snowboard Association Eastern Regional Championship in just a month's time.
