ANDOVER, N.H. – Li Aunes' third individual victory of the season led the Castleton University women's alpine ski team on Saturday afternoon at Proctor Ski Area. The Spartans collected a couple of first-place finishes as a team in the International Ski Federation-University races, which completed the regular season.
Finishing first in eight of a possible 10 competitions, the women's alpine ski team earned the ECSC MacConnell Division regular season title. It is the first time since joining the division that Castleton has collected such an accomplishment. Placing just behind Castleton was Babson College and the University of Connecticut.
Similarly, in the team competition on Saturday, the Spartans defeated the Beavers and Huskies, respectively. In the day's first slalom, Castleton raced a combined time of 4:48.94, while Babson was 4:56.08 and UConn, 4:57.96. Later on, the times varied slightly more as each team had approximately five seconds between.
Individually, Aunes rattled off a clean sweep of the first slalom, notching the top times in both runs with 45.43 and 49.79, respectively. During the second slalom, Aunes put together a couple of solid runs, which were good for fourth place. Meanwhile, Kylie Mackie claimed two third-place finishes, including a couple of second-best times in the four runs.
Also assisting in the team scoring, Kirsten Kruk completed the first slalom event in fourth for the Spartans. She later helped clinch the gold finish after completing her two runs in sixth and fourth individually, which was Castleton's third-best athlete.
Women's alpine skiing returns to the slopes at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 24 for the USCSA Eastern Regional Championships, which are to be held at West Mountain in Queensbury, N.Y.
