LUDLOW, Vt. – The Castleton University women's alpine ski team picked up its second victory in as many days to open the season, taking the top spot at the podium in the giant slalom after placing four racers in the top-five at Okemo Mountain Resort on Friday afternoon.
The Spartans posted a team time of 8:29.51, besting second-place UConn (8:47.30) by 18 seconds. Clarkson (9:04.78), Saint Anselm (9:10.11) and UMass (9:52.73) rounded out the top-five teams in the 10-team field. Conditions were tough for racers across the board, as 16 racers in the field failed to complete the course, 15 of them coming on the day's opening run.
Kylie Mackie paced the field, posting the fastest opening run of the day and sealing her second-career victory with the third-fastest second run for a combined time of 2:49.02. Freshman Lena Soehnle was right on her heels in second place with a time of 2:50.11, finishing with the second-fastest run in each heat to land on the podium for the first time in her career.
Karoline Rettenbacher grabbed a fourth-place finish for the Spartans, clocking in at 2:50.38 as finish positions 2-through-4 were separated by less than half of a second. Linn Ljungemo placed fifth for Castleton with a two-run total of 2:52.60. Thursday's slalom winner Li Aunes narrowly missed out on a top-10 finish, placing 11th overall with a time of 2:59.35.
Castleton returns to action on Friday at Crotched Mountain for the giant slalom.
