Women's Soccer to Host Wheaton Saturday

CASTLETON, Vt. – The Castleton women's soccer team (0-1-1) is set to host Wheaton (1-0-1) in a non-conference matchup at 2:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon at Spartan Stadium.

Castleton is coming off a hard-fought, 1-1, double-overtime draw against Westfield State in its home opener Wednesday night. Freshman Loren Henderson tallied 10 saves in her second career start before Kiley Baran notched four saves in the final two overtime periods to preserve the draw.

Julia Carone scored the goal for the Spartans, tallying the first goal of the season for Castleton in the 47th minute. Her goal broke a scoreless tie and gave Castleton a lead in the second half, but Westfield State responded in the 76th minute with the equalizer on a penalty kick.

Henderson has 17 saves on the season and has recorded a .850 save percentage in her first 159 minutes of action between the pipes. Baran made four saves in her first-ever action in goal, while Rachel Shambo has also seen 20 minutes in goal this season for Castleton.

Wheaton enters the weekend 1-0-1 on the season after defeating University of New England, 4-1, on Sunday. Four different Lyons tallied goals in the victory. Wheaton opened its season with a 2-2, double-overtime draw against Worcester State.

The Lyons are averaging three goals per contest thus far this season. Hannah Lepordo leads the squad with two goals, while four different Lyons have found the back of the net. Aymara O'Brien-Pappa has two assists to lead the team to date.

Leann Wolf has led the Wheaton defense with both starts in goal. Wolf has three saves and has allowed two goals in 110 minutes of action. Alexa Barbagallo has also seen time between the pipes in both games this season, tallying three saves and one goal allowed in 90 minutes.

The two teams faced each other last season, with Wheaton coming away with the 3-1 victory.
