Women's Soccer Continues NAC Stretch at Lyndon Saturday

CASTLETON, Vt. – The Castleton women's soccer team (3-3-1, 2-0 NAC) will look to continue its recent momentum when it travels to Lyndon for a North Atlantic Conference matchup against the Hornets (0-5, 0-1 NAC) Saturday afternoon at 3:30 p.m.

After dropping a pair of early contests to tough non-conference opponents, Castleton has won three of its last four games, including two against NAC foes, while outscoring opponents 16-4 over that span. The Spartans most recently handed Green Mountain its first loss of the season, 7-0.

Behind her first career hat trick in the win over Green Mountain, Rylee Nichols is the leading scorer for Castleton with five goals this season, four of which have come in conference games. Makenzi Bellando has nine points on four goals and one assist, while Julia Carone and Bronwen Hopwood have each tallied six points to date. 12 different players have scored a goal this season for the Spartans, who are averaging 2.57 goals per game.

Defensively, the Spartans have seen strong play from two starters in Kiley Baran and Rachel Shambo. Baran has started the last four games in goal and holds an .818 save percentage with 18 saves in 387 minutes. The senior started the season as a forward but has seen success as a goalkeeper this season, piling up 18 saves while allowing just four goals en route to a 3-1 record.

Lyndon has struggled on both ends of this season, most recently falling to UMaine-Farmington, 7-0, in its conference opener last Saturday. The Hornets have been outscored 27-5 so far this season and are still searching for their first win of the season.

The Hornets are averaging one goal per game with four different players finding the back of the net thus far this season. Sarah Gerry leads the squad with two goals, while Kiya DeWitt, Taylor Hollis, and Rose Wilson each have one tally on the season.

The Hornets' offensive struggles have continued on the defensive end, as they are averaging 4.66 goals allowed per game. Victoria McCormack and Johanna Sargent have split time in goal, with the latter earning three starts. Sargent has 62 saves in 328 minutes while sporting a .738 save percentage and a 6.02 goals-against average this season.

The Spartans scored a season-high 13 goals against Lyndon last year en route to a 13-0 shutout victory on their home turf. Castleton has taken the last three matchups against Lyndon by a combined score of 27-0.
