BOSTON, Mass. – The sixth-seeded Castleton University women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 contest to the No. 3 UMass Boston Beacons in the Little East Conference quarterfinals on Tuesday evening at James Cotter Field.
Castleton completes its season at 7-12-0, while UMass Boston will advance to face No. 2 Eastern Connecticut in the semifinal.
Back-and-forth play throughout the first and a majority of the second half provided few chances on either side of the ball. With few chances, the Beacons made the most of their opportunities, connecting with the twine in the 86th minute to send the home team past the visiting Spartans. Morgan Palma capitalized on a loose ball near the box, sending it across to the far post.
The Spartans tallied six shots with three coming on-goal – provided by Julia Carone, Bronwen Hopwood and Rylee Nichols – in the largely defensive match. Castleton was able to get the ball into its offensive zone several times, but it was unable to get the final through pass for a clean shot-on-goal.
Loren Henderson provided a stellar performance in goal, making seven saves in the loss. She played all 90 minutes.
UMass Boston led the total shot count 17-6 over Castleton while the Spartan defense was able to redirect 10 of those attempts away from goal.
Returning the majority of its roster in 2019, Castleton will look to build on a highly successful freshman campaign in the Little East Conference.
