CASTLETON, Vt. – The Castleton women's tennis squad was victorious in their season opener against Johnson State College on Tuesday evening, winning the match by a final of 6-3. Jackie Lisak cruised to a No. 2 singles victory, winning both sets by a final of 6-0.
In No. 1 singles action, Castleton's (1-0) Sara Novenstern defeated Annette Kaminski 6-4, 6-2. Diane Benedicto and Kirsten Kruk were also victorious in singles matches for the Spartans, with Benedicto winning in straight sets and Kruk winning a match that went all three sets. Overall, Castleton won four out of the six singles matches on the day.
The Spartans also dominated the doubles circuit, with Ciara Bannister and Kruk cruising to an 8-1 victory over Johnson's (0-1) Kali Covell and Nicole Monick. Monika Plante and Benedicto were also victorious, defeating Jana Somero and Jordan Miller by a final of 8-5. The Spartans top pairing in doubles fell, however, as Johnson's Annette Kaminski and Katerina Von Wookom took down Novenstern and Lisak.
Castleton will be back in action on Saturday, September 5, when they host Lyndon State College. The match is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
