Volleyball Splits in Maine

CASTLETON, Vt. – The Castleton women's volleyball team earned its first victory of the season in dominate fashion over Maine-Presque Isle before falling to host Southern Maine on Sunday afternoon. 

The Spartans put together their most complete performance of the year against the Owls, taking the match in three quick sets, 25-9, 25-9 and 25-14. Junior Brittany Brayman did a bit of everything, registering five kills and eight digs along with an impressive five service aces. Kelly Mills added five digs, four kills and two aces. Junior Shelby Smyth dished off a team-high 13 assists in the match. 

Facing an undefeated Southern Maine squad Castleton came out swinging and fell just short 25-20 in the opening set. The Spartans then dropped the second 25-19 before ending the match with a 25-16 loss in the final set. Kaylee Pratt hit .308 in the match with five kills and one block while Smyth dished off 11 assists.  Amanda Chambers led the defense with 13 digs. 

The Spartans move to 1-4 with the split on the day. They return to action next Saturday when they play Cobleskill and Maine-Presque Isle once again.
