CASTLETON, Vt. – The Spartans dispatched Maine-Presque Isle in three sets but came up just short in a five-set duel with SUNY Cobleskill on Saturday afternoon at Green Mountain College.
Castleton hit .152 against the Owls while holding them to a -.197 hitting percentage in their straight-set win. The Spartans took the opening set 25-11 and then captured the second 25-13. They finished off the match with a 25-10 victory.
Supplementing the offense for Castleton was Amanda Chambers and Kelly Mills who had five and four kills respectively. Alex Madsen and Michaela Babineau were a force from the service line with each recording four aces. Chambers and Brayman were also strong defensively, recording six digs apiece.
Morgan Swan and Hannah Boyce led the UMP offense with three kills apiece. Shannon Brown led the way defensively for the Owls with a game-high eight digs, while Katie Patenaude tallied two solo blocks at the net.
Facing a tough Fighting Tigers squad Castleton dropped the opening set by a 25-15 margin. The Spartans came back to capture the second 25-19 before falling 25-17 in the third. Facing defeat Castleton took the fourth set 25-23 and then jumped in front 4-1 in the fifth set. However, Cobleskill came back and eventually won by a 15-10 margin.
Brayman and Amanda Chambers each led the team with nine kills while Kaylee Pratt added eight kills. Kristi Lawless led the team with 23 digs while Chambers added 15. Shelby Smyth was impressive with 17 assists, 11 digs and two aces.
Raven Worthing led the Fighting Tiger offense with 11 kills and also added four aces. Sarah Ruggles chipped in with 27 assists, eight digs and four aces.
The Spartans move to 2-5 with Saturday's split. They return to action on Sunday during Homecoming weekend, hosting Southern Vt. at 11 am and then Lyndon St. at 3 pm.
