HOLYOKE, Mass. – Castleton nearly pulled off comeback victory against Westfield St. in the opening match of the day before falling in five sets, but rebounded to conclude the afternoon with a 3-1 win over host Bay Path.
The Spartans began the day with a tough match against the Owls. They quickly found themselves down 2-0, falling 25-15 in each of the first two sets. They responded with a 25-22 victory in the third set and then took the fourth 25-17. However, the fifth set was all Westfield St. as Castleton dropped it 15-3.
The Owls hit 0.84 with 43 kills and 47 digs while Castleton finished at a .100 clip with 35 kills and 66 digs.
Brittany Brayman led the team with eight kills and 16 digs while Kaylee Pratt added seven kills, five digs and a pair of blocks. Cassidy Tedeschi contributed six kills while Shelby Smyth dished off 14 assists with one ace.
Casey Howe led Westfield St. with 16 kills and five aces while hitting .343. Kelsey Reilly added 11 kills while Brigid Murray dished off 26 assists.
In their final match of the day, Castleton outlasted a tough Bay Path team in four sets. The Spartans took the first set 25-15 before dropping the second by a 26-24 margin. They rebounded to capture the third 25-23 and then finished off the Wildcats with a 25-22 win in the fourth set.
The Spartans hit .196 in the match, registering 43 kills, 13 aces and 57 digs while Bay Path had 42 kills, 13 aces and 41 digs on the afternoon.
Amanda Chambers led the offense with 11 kills while hitting .421 and added five digs. Brittany Brayman, meanwhile, hit .600 with ten kills and a season-high 17 digs to go with three aces and a pair of blocks. Kristi Lawless chipped in with three aces and 12 digs while Alex Madsen dished off a team-high 12 assists.
Lauren Vallee and Elizabeth Haylette combined for 27 kills to lead the offense while the duo added 22 digs. Lexi Cears dished off 31 assists.
Castleton returns to action on Friday during Homecoming Weekend when the team hosts Elms at 7 pm.
