Spartan Volleyball Loses to MCLA, Bay Path

EAST LONGMEADOW, Mass. – The Castleton University volleyball team lost to MCLA, 3-0 (25-6, 25-15, 25-14), and to Bay Path, 3-0 (25-12, 25-19, 25-20), Saturday afternoon in non-conference collegiate volleyball matches at First Baptist Church Gymnasium.

MCLA (2-5) went on a 21-2 scoring run to end the first set, a 12-2 scoring stretch to establish a significant lead in the second set, and runs of 10-2 and 8-2 at the start and end of the third set. Meghan Zawatsky led the Spartans with two kills, two assists, two service aces, and nine defensive digs.

The Spartans executed better offense against Bay Path, led by Maria Jackson with five kills, 10 assists, and seven digs. Bay Path (3-2) opened a 13-4 lead in the first set and then closed out the set with a 7-1 run, went on 13-2 run in the second set before clinching the middle set with four unanswered points, and then rallied from an 18-12 deficit in the third set by winning 13 of the final 15 points of the match.

Castleton (0-6) opens its home schedule next Sunday, Sept. 17, with matches against Old Westbury at 12 noon and Paul Smith's College at 2 p.m. at Glenbrook Gymnasium.
