CASTLETON, Vt. – The Castleton University volleyball team returns to Glenbrook Gym Friday evening, Oct. 6, for a non-conference match against the Lyndon Hornets starting at 6 p.m.
The Spartans will look to snap a three-match losing streak as they bring a 3-10 overall record into their first contest of the month. Last Saturday, Castleton lost to Colby-Sawyer and New England College in its first two conference matches of the season.
Freshman Meghan Zawatsky has been the team's libero through most of the season, collecting seven service aces and eight digs last weekend against New England College. Zawatsky has performed well so far this season at Glenbrook Gym, averaging 3.25 service aces and 14.75 digs per match in the four home contests.
Lyndon fell to 2-12 overall after losing consecutive matches at home to the College of St. Joseph Thursday night. Both Hornet victories this season have come against Johnson State, including a conference win Sept. 26 that puts Lyndon in fifth place in the NAC standings with a 1-2 league record.
Junior Faith Richard leads the Hornets with 27 kills, 31 service aces, and 51 digs so far this season. Courtney Gagne has collected a team-high 17 assists as well as 44 digs, second most on the squad, while Alexis Walker has contributed 19 kills, 14 assists, 11 service aces, and 18 digs.
This will be the 22nd meeting all-time between Castleton and Lyndon on the volleyball court, with the Spartans owning a 13-8 advantage. Castleton is 8-1 against Lyndon at Glenbrook Gym, including two 3-0 victories at home during the 2015 season.
The Hornets defeated the Spartans in all three meetings last season, including a tight five-set match on Oct. 22, 2016, when Castleton rallied from a 2-0 match deficit to force a fifth set before Lyndon prevailed in the deciding set, 15-12. One week later, the Hornets ended the Spartans' season with a 3-0 victory in the NAC Tournament quarterfinals.
After Friday's match, Castleton enters a busy road swing with four matches in five days, starting at Green Mountain Tuesday, Oct. 10, continuing at MCLA Thursday, Oct. 12, and concluding at Maine Maritime against Husson and the Mariners Saturday, Oct. 14. The Spartans will travel to Lyndon to face the Hornets in a conference match Saturday, Oct. 21.
