Rally falls short as Field Hockey drops season opener to Union

SCHENCTADY, N.Y. -- Gabriella Hunt and Allison Lowell scored the first two goals of the 2019 season as the Castleton University field hockey team fell to Union College on Friday night.

Castleton's defense was put to the test early as it survived seven shots by Union in the first quarter. The Dutchwomen kicked off the scoring however, with a late first quarter goal from Katie Talacci that barely passed the diving goaltender Hope Brown

Brown, earning her first career start in net, saved 10 shots in the contest. The Spartans were outshot by the Dutchwomen 19-12. 

After a scoreless second quarter, Union added two more goals in the third from Katie Talacci and Charlotte Leyland to take a 3-0 lead into the fourth quarter.  

The Spartans' rally began midway through the third quarter with Allison Lowell scoring from short range to the get the team on the board. The team came closer late in the fourth quarter as Gabriella Hunt converted on the scrum and netted her first of the season with just over a minute left in the game. With her goal tonight, Hunt moved past Courtney Nolan '10 for 10th place on Castleton's all-time points list. 

The Spartans will continue their road trip as the team travels to take on Morrisville on Sunday, September 1 at 3 p.m.
