WILLIMANTIC, Conn. -- The Castleton University field hockey team used two goals from junior Loretta Blakeney to defeat Eastern Connecticut State 4-1 at Rick McCarthy Field Saturday afternoon.
With strong defense being the highlight of the first half, neither team was able to break through offensively. However, the Spartans (6-4, 4-1 LEC) were able to outshoot the Warriors (2-8, 2-4 LEC) 4-1 going into halftime.
The third quarter began and the Spartans came alive as Blakeney tallied her first goal of the game at the 36:29 mark. Blakeney quickly scored her second of the game four minutes later as the Spartans continued to bombard the Warriors with shots on goal.
Senior Cydney Jeffrey would add to the Spartans' lead in the fourth quarter as she guided the ball into the back of the net unassisted.
The Warriors would finally get on the board as Khiara Valentine scored her second goal of the season at the 58:20 mark in the fourth quarter.
Freshman Kaitlin Bardellini would quickly answer and tallied one more goal for the Spartans with less than a minute left in the game. Bardellini continues to lead all LEC freshman in goals (11), assists (5), and points (27).
Through five LEC contests, the Spartans have outscored their opponents 23-4 and are now in sole possession of fourth place.
Field hockey will return to action on Wednesday, October 9 as it take on Plymouth State at Dave Wolk Stadium in a Little East Conference matchup starting at 7 p.m.
